Rheumatology, a crucial branch of medicine, addresses various conditions affecting muscles and joints, often complicated by inflammatory and autoimmune factors. These conditions tend to worsen in cold climates, further complicating patient management and significantly affecting the quality of life.

In Ayurvedic practice, the use of massage oils for the treatment of rheumatic disorders is common. These oils are applied locally, with practitioners and sometimes even patients selecting oils that they believe will alleviate pain. While the market is flooded with oils, creams, and liniments—some of which provide superficial relief—many fail to penetrate deeper tissues where the root of the pain lies.

Ayurveda recognizes the complexity of these conditions and offers a variety of oils tailored to specific needs. The selection of the appropriate oil is crucial, as an incorrect choice can exacerbate the condition. Well-known oils like Dhanwantharam Thailam, Ksheerabala Tailam, and Sahacharadi Thailam are frequently used, but their effectiveness depends on the specific condition and the presence of Ama in the body. In cases where Ama is present, even minimal application of oil can be contraindicated, emphasizing the importance of selecting the correct oil to achieve the desired therapeutic outcome.

In my presentation, I will evaluate several commonly available oils, comparing their effectiveness in treating different rheumatic conditions. I will also analyse the ingredients of these oils, offering insights into which oils are most suitable for specific situations and which may be less effective. This analysis aims to provide valuable information for practitioners who use oils in massage therapy as part of therapeutic interventions, helping them to make informed, judicious choices in their practice.
